From banking to helping households

Born in Pretoria in 1976, Pieter developed an early interest in economics and business and went on to study finance at the University of Pretoria. He began his career in retail banking before moving into consumer lending and financial advisory roles, where he saw first-hand the financial challenges facing ordinary South African households.

Throughout his career, Pieter has worked with people from a wide range of financial backgrounds, from young professionals managing their first salaries to families navigating debt, rising living costs and unexpected expenses. These experiences convinced him that good financial advice shouldn’t be complicated, intimidating or reserved for those who can afford professional advisers.

Why he started Riorcal

In 2026, Pieter founded Riorcal.com, an independent personal finance blog that he writes and manages entirely himself. His goal is straightforward: to help South Africans make better financial decisions by explaining everyday money matters in clear, practical language.

Through Riorcal, Pieter shares his perspective on personal loans, responsible borrowing, budgeting, debt management, saving and the wider South African financial landscape. He believes that understanding the true cost of credit, comparing financial products and building sensible money habits can make a meaningful difference to people’s lives.

Away from the numbers

Outside of finance, Pieter is a devoted rugby supporter who rarely misses a Springboks match. He is equally passionate about dogs, and spends his weekends walking his two energetic Labradors, watching rugby and enjoying the outdoors with family and friends.

Despite his decades of experience, Pieter maintains that managing money is a lifelong learning process.
